Grad
Explore the Tranquil Charm of Grad Municipality
Nestled in the rolling hills of northeastern Slovenia, Grad Municipality is a peaceful corner of the Prekmurje region, famed for its lush landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Its centerpiece is the village of Grad, home to Slovenia’s largest castle, Grad Castle, which sits majestically atop a gentle hill surrounded by forests and meadows. The area is characterized by its gentle rural scenery, dotted with vineyards, orchards, and traditional homesteads, creating a tranquil escape for nature lovers and those seeking authentic local experiences. Grad is a crossroads of traditions, where Hungarian and Slovenian influences blend seamlessly in daily life, from language to cuisine. Visitors will find a warm, welcoming atmosphere, a slower pace of life, and a deep-rooted sense of community. The municipality is also a gateway to the Goričko Landscape Park, offering countless opportunities for outdoor adventures and wildlife observation.
Safety
Grad Municipality is very safe for travelers, with low crime rates and a peaceful rural environment. Exercise normal precautions, especially when exploring remote areas or driving on country roads.
Visas
Slovenia is part of the Schengen Area; EU citizens can enter freely, while others may need a Schengen visa depending on their nationality.
Customs regulations
Respect local traditions, especially religious customs and festivals. Greetings are polite and formal, and it is customary to address elders with respect. Always ask before photographing people or private property.
Prices
Grad offers excellent value for money compared to urban centers. Accommodation, meals, and activities are generally affordable, making it ideal for budget travelers. Local produce and wines are inexpensive and of high quality.
People and nationalities
The population is predominantly Slovene, with a significant Hungarian minority, reflecting the region's multicultural heritage. Locals are friendly and often eager to share their customs and traditions, especially during festivals and village gatherings.
Weather
Grad experiences a continental climate with warm summers and cold, often snowy winters. The best time to visit is late spring through early autumn (May–September), when the weather is mild and the countryside is at its most vibrant. Winters are quiet and can be charming for those who enjoy solitude and snowy landscapes.
Health
Basic medical facilities and pharmacies are available in the region, with major hospitals located in nearby Murska Sobota. Emergency services are reliable and easily accessible.
Food
Bograč
A hearty meat stew made with pork, beef, venison, potatoes, and paprika, slow-cooked in a cauldron. This signature Prekmurje dish is often served during festivals and gatherings.
Prekmurska gibanica
A rich, layered pastry filled with cottage cheese, poppy seeds, walnuts, apples, and raisins. It's a sweet treat unique to the Prekmurje region and beloved by locals.

Bučna juha
A creamy pumpkin soup, often flavored with onions, garlic, and local herbs. It’s a popular starter in autumn when pumpkins are in season.
Transport
Car rental
The most convenient way to explore Grad and the wider Goričko area, as public transport is limited and many attractions are in rural locations.
Regional bus service
Bus connections link Grad with larger towns like Murska Sobota, though schedules may be infrequent, especially on weekends.
Cycling
The quiet country roads and marked cycling trails make bikes a great option for local exploration.
Taxi
