Brda
Brda: Slovenia’s Sun-Kissed Wine Country
Nestled between the Julian Alps and the Adriatic Sea, Brda is a picturesque municipality in western Slovenia, renowned for its rolling vineyards, charming hilltop villages, and Mediterranean flair. Often described as 'Slovenian Tuscany,' Brda is a patchwork of orchards, olive groves, and cypress-lined roads, offering enchanting views and vibrant landscapes year-round. The region is celebrated for its world-class wines, particularly Rebula and Merlot, and its tranquil atmosphere makes it a favorite escape for food and wine lovers. Culturally, Brda is a blend of Slovene and Friulian influences due to its proximity to the Italian border. The medieval village of Šmartno, with its cobbled alleys and fortified walls, is a highlight, while the area’s lively markets and festivals showcase local produce and traditions. Whether you’re exploring ancient castles, tasting award-winning wines, or cycling through sunlit hills, Brda promises an authentic and unforgettable Slovenian experience.

What to visit?
History
Brda’s fertile hills were first settled by Illyrian and Roman peoples, establishing early vineyards and olive groves.
Medieval villages like Šmartno were fortified as the region became a strategic borderland between Venetian and Habsburg territories.
The Renaissance saw the rise of prosperous noble families who built castles, expanded vineyards, and fostered local art and culture.
Brda came under Austrian rule after the fall of the Venetian Republic, influencing its architecture and administrative structure.
After World War I, Brda was annexed to Italy, leaving a lasting blend of Italian and Slovene cultural elements.
Following World War II, most of Brda became part of Yugoslavia (now Slovenia), but some villages remained in Italy, dividing families and communities.
With Slovenia’s independence, Brda developed as a premier wine region and cultural destination, embracing cross-border cooperation.
