What to visit?
History
The area now known as Kidričevo was part of the Roman province of Noricum, with evidence of Roman roads and settlements nearby.
Construction of the large aluminum factory began, setting the stage for Kidričevo’s development as an industrial hub.
During World War II, the region was occupied by Nazi Germany, and the factory was repurposed for wartime production.
Post-war, Kidričevo became known for its labor camp ('Sterntal'), where ethnic Germans and others were interned.
The town was renamed from Strnišče to Kidričevo in honor of Communist leader Boris Kidrič.
Slovenia declared independence; Kidričevo transitioned to a modern municipality within the new nation.
Kidričevo officially became a self-governing municipality, further developing its local administration and community services.
