History
The first written mention of Podčetrtek dates to the 13th century, marking its emergence as a settlement near the Sotla River.
Olimje Monastery was originally founded as a defensive castle, reflecting the region’s strategic importance in medieval times.
The castle at Olimje was converted into a monastic complex by Pauline monks, establishing one of Europe’s oldest pharmacies.
Following World War II, Podčetrtek became part of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia within Yugoslavia, experiencing agricultural and spa development.
Slovenia declares independence, and Podčetrtek begins to invest in modern wellness tourism and infrastructure.
The Terme Olimia spa complex opens, quickly becoming a major attraction and boosting the municipality’s profile in health tourism.
