Nova Gorica
Nova Gorica: Slovenia’s Vibrant Border Gateway
Nestled in western Slovenia, Nova Gorica is a dynamic municipality right on the Italian border, often referred to as the "New Gorizia." Developed after World War II, the city is known for its lush gardens, lively cultural scene, and unique position as a crossroads between Slavic and Italian cultures. The Soča River valley, rolling hills, and proximity to the Julian Alps provide a scenic backdrop, while the town itself pulses with casinos, festivals, and a youthful university vibe. Nova Gorica stands out for its blend of modern urban life and natural beauty, with vineyards climbing the hillsides and the historic town of Gorizia just steps away in Italy. The region is a melting pot, where bilingual signs and cross-border events are part of daily life. Whether you're seeking outdoor adventure, gourmet delights, or a taste of local history, Nova Gorica offers a vibrant introduction to Slovenia’s west.

What to visit?
History
The region has seen settlement since Roman times, with ancient roads linking it to Aquileia and the Adriatic.
Gorizia, just across the border from present-day Nova Gorica, flourishes under Habsburg rule as a strategic crossroads.
After World War I, the border between Italy and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia) divides the Goriška region.
Following the Paris Peace Treaty, the border is redrawn, and Nova Gorica is founded as a new Slovenian town to replace Gorizia for Yugoslavia.
Nova Gorica officially gains the status of a municipality and grows rapidly as a planned city.
Slovenia joins the European Union, making the border between Nova Gorica and Gorizia increasingly open.
With Slovenia’s entry into the Schengen Area, the border becomes largely symbolic, fostering cross-border cooperation.
Nova Gorica and Italian Gorizia are jointly named European Capital of Culture, highlighting their shared heritage.
