What to visit?
History
Škofja Loka is first mentioned in written records, when Emperor Otto II granted the area to the Bishops of Freising.
A major earthquake damages much of the medieval town, leading to extensive rebuilding in the Renaissance style.
The Škofja Loka Passion Play is first performed, becoming one of the oldest surviving dramatic texts in Slovene.
Secularization ends the rule of the Bishops of Freising over Škofja Loka, bringing the town under Habsburg administration.
After World War I, Škofja Loka becomes part of the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia).
World War II ends, and the region becomes part of socialist Yugoslavia, later joining independent Slovenia in 1991.
The Škofja Loka Passion Play is revived, attracting visitors from around the world and reaffirming the town’s cultural significance.
