History
Prehistoric settlements existed in the Litija area, as evidenced by archaeological finds along the Sava River.
During Roman times, the area was part of the province of Noricum; trade routes passed near modern-day Litija.
Litija is first mentioned in written records, highlighting its early significance as a river crossing and settlement.
Mining for lead and silver began in the area, shaping the region’s economy and settlement patterns for centuries.
The construction of the Vienna–Trieste railway brought industrial development and growth to Litija.
After World War I, Litija became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia).
Slovenia declares independence and Litija becomes part of the new republic.
Litija becomes its own municipality, splitting from the neighboring municipality of Šmartno pri Litiji.
