What to visit?
History
Settlement began by the Romans, who established a small port and villa in the area now known as Izola.
Izola is first mentioned in written records as 'Insula,' Latin for 'island,' reflecting its original insular geography.
Izola comes under the control of the Venetian Republic, marking centuries of Venetian cultural and architectural influence.
The fall of Venice sees Izola briefly pass to the Austrian Empire as part of the Treaty of Campo Formio.
After World War I, Izola becomes part of Italy, remaining under Italian administration until the end of World War II.
The London Memorandum assigns Izola to Yugoslavia; subsequent decades see Slovenian and Croatian communities become more prominent.
Slovenia declares independence, and Izola becomes part of the newly independent nation.
