What to visit?
History
The area now known as Buikwe was part of the historic Buganda Kingdom, with traditional chieftaincies and cultural significance.
The construction of the Uganda Railway reached the nearby town of Lugazi, boosting trade and development.
Mabira Forest Reserve was officially established, protecting one of Uganda's largest and most biodiverse rainforests.
Establishment of the Lugazi Sugar Corporation, which became a major economic driver in the region.
Buikwe was carved out of Mukono District, becoming its own administrative district.
