ミャンマーで最も古い文明は紀元前2000年頃に出現したピューの都市国家であり、これらの都市国家は東南アジアの広範な交易と文化交流のネットワークの一部でした。
パガン王国の建国は地域で最初の統一国家の始まりを示し、パガンは上座部仏教と文化の重要な中心地となりました。
モンゴルの侵攻によりパガン王国は滅亡し、分裂の時代が訪れ、アヴァ、ハンタワディ、シャン州などの小王国が台頭しました。
タウンー朝の興隆によりミャンマーは再統一され、領土を拡大して東南アジア最大級の帝国の一つとなりました。
タウンー朝の滅亡とコンバウン朝の興隆により、帝国はさらに拡大し、隣接する国家との紛争に関与し続けました。
第一次英緬戦争が始まり、英国のミャンマーに対する植民地的関心の始まりを示しました。戦争は1826年のヤンダボ条約で終結し、ミャンマーの一部が英領インドに割譲されました。

ミャンマーは英国の支配から独立し、主権国家となりました。国は当初、議会制民主主義として設立されました。
ネ・ウィン将軍が率いる軍事クーデターにより民主政府が打倒され、軍事政権が樹立され、社会主義統治の時代が始まった。
8888蜂起は、軍事政権に対する全国的な抗議運動の一連であり、激しく弾圧され、数千人の死者を出し、最終的に国家法秩序回復評議会(SLORC)が設立された。
総選挙が行われ、アウンサンスーチー率いる国民民主連盟(NLD)が圧勝した。しかし、軍はその結果を認めなかった。
軍事政権は正式に解散され、名目上の文民政府が設立され、一連の政治的および経済的改革が進められた。
NLDが総選挙で多数を獲得し、アウンサンスーチーがミャンマーの事実上の指導者となり、民主的統治への重要な一歩となった。
軍がクーデターを起こし、アウンサンスーチーや他の指導者を拘束し、非常事態を宣言、多くの民主的成果が覆され、広範な抗議と国際的非難を招いた。
