Batanes: The Idyllic Isles of the North
Batanes, the northernmost province of the Philippines, captivates travelers with its rolling green hills, dramatic cliffs, and quaint stone villages. Comprising a group of small islands surrounded by the vast Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea, Batanes is celebrated for its windswept landscapes, historic lighthouses, and unique Ivatan culture. The archipelago’s remoteness has preserved its pristine beauty and traditional way of life, offering visitors a rare glimpse into a world untouched by mass tourism. The province’s capital, Basco, serves as the gateway to the islands, with attractions like Mount Iraya, the Basco Lighthouse, and the traditional Ivatan houses made of limestone and cogon grass. Visitors are drawn to Batanes for its serenity, rich cultural heritage, and the hospitality of its people, making it a haven for those seeking both adventure and tranquility.
Safety
Batanes is considered one of the safest places in the Philippines, with very low crime rates. However, due to its remote location, medical facilities are limited, and travelers should exercise caution during typhoon season.
Visas
Visa requirements are the same as the rest of the Philippines; most nationalities can enter visa-free for 30 days. Always check current entry requirements before travel.
Customs regulations
Respect local traditions, such as asking permission before entering private property or taking photos of people and homes. Ivatans value modesty and courtesy—greet locals with a smile and dress conservatively, especially in villages.
Prices
Traveling in Batanes can be more expensive compared to other Philippine destinations due to its remoteness; expect higher prices for flights, food, and lodging. Budget and mid-range guesthouses are available, while luxury options are limited.
People and nationalities
Batanes is home to the Ivatan people, known for their resilience, warmth, and strong community ties. Their culture is shaped by the region’s harsh climate and isolation, reflected in their traditional stone houses and unique festivals.
Weather
Batanes experiences a subtropical climate, with cool winds from October to March and warmer, wetter weather from June to September. Typhoons can be frequent, especially from July to October, so the best time to visit is during the dry and cool months of March to June. Temperatures are generally mild compared to the rest of the country.
Health
There is a provincial hospital in Basco and a few clinics, but advanced medical care may require evacuation to Luzon. Pharmacies are limited, so bring essential medications.
Food
Uvud Balls
A signature Ivatan dish made from banana pith, minced pork or beef, and flying fish, formed into balls and cooked with local spices. It is savory and often served with rice.
Vunung
Sticky rice and pork or fish wrapped in kabaya (breadfruit) or banana leaves, then steamed; traditionally prepared for special occasions and festivals.
Dibang (Flying Fish)
Fresh flying fish, either grilled, fried, or dried, is a staple in Batanes due to the abundance of this catch. It is often enjoyed with local dipping sauces.
Luñis
Ivatan-style preserved pork, similar to adobo but cooked in its own fat without soy sauce, resulting in tender, flavorful meat that can be stored for weeks.
Supas
A yellow turmeric rice dish usually served during feasts or gatherings, often paired with luñis or grilled fish for a hearty meal.
Transport
Tricycles
Motorized tricycles are the main mode of transport within Basco and nearby towns; they can be hired for short trips or day tours.
Bicycle and Motorbike Rentals
Bicycles and motorbikes are available for rent in Basco, offering flexibility for independent exploration of the island’s scenic routes.
Inter-island Boats
Small boats, or faluwas, connect Basco to neighboring islands like Sabtang and Itbayat; schedules are weather-dependent and can be affected by sea conditions.
Van and Jeepney Tours
Organized van or jeepney tours are popular for visiting multiple attractions and remote villages with the guidance of local experts.
