What to visit?
History
The Ardahan region forms part of the ancient Urartian Kingdom, with archaeological remains indicating early settlement.
Under the rule of the Bagratid Armenian Kingdom, Ardahan served as a strategic stronghold along the trade routes.
The region was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire following the Peace of Amasya with Persia.
Ardahan was ceded to the Russian Empire after the Russo-Turkish War, becoming part of the Kars Oblast.
Following World War I and the Russian Revolution, Ardahan changed hands several times between Turkish, Armenian, and Georgian forces.
The Treaty of Kars confirmed Ardahan’s return to Turkish control, establishing the modern provincial borders.
Ardahan was officially separated from Kars Province and established as its own province within Turkey.
