History
The area that is now Puducherry was part of the Chola and later the Pallava empires, with thriving trade links to Rome and Southeast Asia.
The French East India Company established a settlement at Pondicherry, marking the start of French colonial influence.
Dutch forces captured Pondicherry from the French, but it was returned to France by the Treaty of Ryswick in 1699.
The British captured and largely destroyed the town during the Seven Years’ War, but it was returned to French control in 1763.
Puducherry and other French settlements voted to join the Indian Union in a de facto transfer, ending nearly three centuries of French rule.
The de jure transfer of Puducherry to India was completed, and it officially became a Union Territory.
Auroville, the international township dedicated to human unity, was founded northeast of Puducherry city.
