Explore the Sacred Land of Bihar
Located in eastern India along the fertile plains of the Ganges River, Bihar is a land steeped in spiritual significance and ancient history. It is famed as the birthplace of Buddhism and Jainism, with sacred sites like Bodh Gaya, where the Buddha attained enlightenment, and Rajgir, once the capital of ancient kingdoms. Bihar’s landscape is marked by lush fields, rolling rivers, and historic cities such as Patna, its vibrant capital. Bihar’s culture is a rich tapestry woven from centuries of tradition, influenced by Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic heritage. The region is renowned for its colorful festivals, folk music, and arts like Madhubani painting. While its ancient ruins and pilgrimage sites draw travelers from around the globe, Bihar also offers authentic rural experiences and a taste of traditional Indian life away from the usual tourist trails.
Safety
Bihar is generally safe for tourists, especially around major cities and religious sites, though petty crime can occur. Exercise standard precautions, be cautious at night, and avoid political gatherings or protests.
Visas
As part of India, Bihar requires a valid Indian visa for foreign travelers. Check the latest entry requirements and e-visa options prior to travel.
Customs regulations
Respect local customs by dressing conservatively and removing shoes before entering temples. Always ask before photographing people, especially in rural areas. It’s customary to greet with a 'Namaste' and show respect to elders.
Prices
Bihar is one of India's most budget-friendly states, with affordable accommodation, food, and transport options. Mid-range travelers can find good hotels in cities, while backpackers can enjoy guesthouses and local eateries for low prices.
People and nationalities
Bihar is home to over 100 million people, primarily speaking Hindi, Maithili, and Bhojpuri. The culture is deeply rooted in family, religion, and hospitality, with strong traditions in music, dance, and festivals.
Weather
Bihar has a subtropical climate with hot summers (April–June), a humid monsoon (July–September), and mild winters (November–February). The best time to visit is during the cooler months from October to March, when temperatures are pleasant. The monsoon brings heavy rain, making travel less convenient.
Health
Good medical facilities are available in Patna and other major cities, with hospitals and pharmacies widely accessible. Drink only bottled or filtered water, and carry basic medicines for travel.
