エクアドルにおける最古の人類の存在の証拠は紀元前約9000年に遡り、バルディビア文化は紀元前約3500年頃に栄えたアメリカ大陸で最も古い文化の一つである。
フランシスコ・ピサロ率いるスペインの征服者たちがインカ帝国の征服を開始し、その領土には現在のエクアドルも含まれていた。キト市は1534年にセバスティアン・デ・ベラルカサールによって建設された。
エクアドルのスペイン支配からの最初の独立の試みは1809年8月10日に起こり、キトの革命家たちが独立を宣言した。この日は現在エクアドルの独立記念日として祝われている。
1822年5月24日にキト近郊でピチンチャの戦いが行われ、アントニオ・ホセ・デ・スクレ率いる独立軍の勝利によりエクアドルはスペイン支配からの独立を確保した。
エクアドルは1830年5月13日にグラン・コロンビアから分離して独立共和国となり、フアン・ホセ・フローレスが初代大統領となった。
