Telšiai Cathedral
Telšių apskritis
Telšiai Cathedral, officially known as Telšių šv. Antano Paduviečio katedra, stands as a prominent religious and architectural landmark in Telšiai, Lithuania. Constructed primarily in the late Baroque and Classicism styles, the cathedral features a rectangular plan with one tower and a three-nave interior separated by pillars adorned with vaults. Its origins trace back to the 17th century with earlier wooden churches and a Bernardine monastery nearby. The current masonry church was built starting in 1761 and consecrated in 1794 by Bishop Tadas Juozapas Bukota. A notable feature is the integration of the 1650-built Saint Loreto chapel, the oldest masonry structure in Telšiai. The cathedral houses seven altars crafted by Jurgis Mažeika and Tomas Podgaiskis, including a baroque and rococo masonry pulpit depicting the four Western Church Fathers. The façade is characterized by simple forms with a tower rising above the central portal, which is crowned by a triangular pediment. Over the centuries, the cathedral has undergone several renovations and expansions, including a significant tower reconstruction in the late 19th century designed by architect Piotras Serbinovičius. The cathedral became the seat of the Telšiai Diocese in 1926, elevating its status to a cathedral. It also preserves the crypts of notable bishops and martyrs, adding to its spiritual and historical importance. Artistic elements include large organs built by Czech master Otto Kratokvil in 1938 and sculptures commemorating the region's Christian heritage. The cathedral remains an active place of worship with regular services and continues to be a cultural and historical symbol of the region.
