Construction of Fort bij Rijnauwen began in 1866 and was completed in 1869 as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, a Dutch defensive waterline system.

It was built to defend the Houtense Vlakte, an area that could not be flooded for defense, and to support other forts near Utrecht.

The fort was constructed following the polygonal system with strong defensive features like a reduit and caponnières.

1877

In 1877, a bomb-proof barracks was added based on lessons from the Franco-Prussian War.
