The Cheese Museum was established following the foundation of the Stichting Hollands Zuivelarchief in 1969, which began collecting dairy-related artifacts.
The museum officially opened its doors in 1983 in the Waag building, a historic weigh house in Alkmaar.
Over time, it expanded its collections and in 2001 acquired a depot in Stompetoren through a loan from Campina Melkunie.
In 2013, the museum contributed the Melkunie archive to the Noord-Hollands Archief, emphasizing its role in preserving regional dairy heritage.
