Rif Fort is a 19th-century fortification located at the entrance of Sint Anna Bay in the Otrobanda district of Willemstad, Curaçao. Built with 1.5-meter thick coral walls, it was designed to defend the island against pirates and enemy invasions. Originally equipped with 56 cannons, the fort played a crucial military role alongside the Waterfort to control the harbor's entrance. After losing its military significance in the 20th century, Rif Fort served as a government building and police station before being redeveloped into a lively shopping and entertainment complex by the Renaissance Curaçao Resort and Casino. Today, it features local restaurants, trendy bars with Latin and Caribbean music, and offers panoramic views of the Punda district and the sea. The fort is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic center of Willemstad, renowned for its preserved colonial architecture and cultural heritage. Rif Fort’s unique location and robust coral construction make it a distinctive landmark blending history with modern leisure.

History

1828

Construction of Rif Fort began in 1828 under the direction of Lieutenant-General Krayenhoff, commissioned by King William I to modernize Curaçao's defensive structures.

1829

Completed on December 29, 1829, the fort was built not only for military defense but also to provide employment on the impoverished island.

Rif Fort, together with the Waterfort, guarded the entrance to Sint Anna Bay and the Otrobanda neighborhood, effectively controlling access to the harbor and rendering Fort Amsterdam less critical.

Over time, as military needs declined, the fort transitioned to serve as government offices and a police station before being transformed into a commercial and entertainment venue.
