History
The area around the Preila Walking Trail was originally home to the village of Nagliai, first mentioned in 1447.
Due to persistent sand drifts, the original village was relocated multiple times: first in 1675, then in 1728 near the Nagliai Bay at the foot of the dunes, and again in 1760 further south.
Despite efforts, the village was eventually buried by sand, leading to the establishment of new settlements including Pervalka, Preila, and Purvynė.
By 1854, the Nagliai village had completely disappeared beneath the sand dunes.
These historical movements reflect the challenging natural environment of the Curonian Spit and the resilience of its inhabitants.
