Várdomb Lookout Tower
Tolna
The Várdomb Lookout Tower, commonly known as the Gömbkilátó, is a distinctive spherical observation tower situated on the volcanic Várdomb hill near Balatonboglár in Hungary. Standing about 60 meters above Lake Balaton's surface, the tower has a diameter of 15 meters, constructed from aluminum in the early 1950s by engineer István Kádár. Originally showcased at the 1958 Brussels World Expo and later featured at the Budapest International Fair, it was relocated to its current site in the late 1960s. The tower replaced an earlier wooden lookout that stood until the mid-1960s. Despite initial plans for interior glass cladding and a panoramic café, these were never realized due to logistical or durability concerns. Named after naturalist János Xántus in the 1970s, the tower underwent periods of closure for renovations and safety reasons but was reopened to the public in 2012 following restoration. It is recognized as a cultural heritage site and a symbol of the region, offering visitors breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding landscape.
