Trsteno Arboretum
Dubrovačko-neretvanska županija
Trsteno Arboretum, located near Dubrovnik, is Croatia's oldest arboretum and a unique monument of garden architecture on the Adriatic coast. Established in 1948 on the grounds of a Renaissance summer residence dating back to the late 14th century, it spans approximately 25 hectares and integrates several distinct areas: a Renaissance park with a summer residence, a late 19th to early 20th-century neo-Romantic park, an ancient olive grove, and natural Mediterranean vegetation along the coast. The arboretum showcases a diverse botanical collection of 465 cultivated and 510 wild plant species, blending natural and cultural heritage. Notable structures within the complex include the 17th-century Chapel of St. Jerome, a historic olive mill, a 15th-century aqueduct, and a Baroque fountain featuring sculptures of Neptune and nymphs from 1736. Managed by the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the arboretum represents centuries of horticultural and cultural history, having been a center for Dubrovnik's humanistic and cultural life. It was damaged during the Croatian War of Independence but has since been largely restored, preserving its botanical and architectural treasures.

Storia
The origins of Trsteno Arboretum date back to 1494 when Ivan Marinov Gučetić-Gozze established a Renaissance summer residence and garden on his estate, which became a cultural hub for Dubrovnik's humanists and artists.
The current Renaissance park is older than many famous Italian and French gardens, featuring geometric layouts and a stone pergola.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a neo-Romantic park was added, blending traditional and landscape garden styles.
In 1948, the estate was officially converted into an arboretum and protected by law as a natural monument in 1949.
Despite suffering damage during the Croatian War of Independence, the arboretum was restored and continues to be managed by the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
