History
Botania's botanical garden origins date back to 1957, initially established for research purposes by the University of Eastern Finland.
It moved to its current Linnunlahti location in 1985.
In 2012, the university decided to discontinue its operation, sparking local opposition and leading to the garden being maintained by volunteers and donations.
In 2018, the facilities were acquired by private entrepreneur Kari Kola, who renovated and reopened Botania with a renewed focus on art, events, and visitor experience.
Since then, the garden has been revitalized as a cultural landmark in Joensuu.
