Storia
The Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias was conceived by Royal Decree in 1844 but was officially inaugurated on May 19, 1980, based on the art collection of the former province of Oviedo.
The initial collection was rescued and cataloged by Emilio Marcos Vallaure and his associate Toto Castañón, who recovered many lost or forgotten works.
In 2015, after eight years of renovations interrupted by archaeological discoveries, the museum doubled its size through an extension designed by architect Francisco Beloqui Mangado, gaining a new façade facing the Cathedral Square.
The museum is currently funded by the Asturias regional government and the City of Oviedo.
