Sankt Bendts Church
Sjælland
Sankt Bendts Church, located in the heart of Ringsted on Zealand, Denmark, is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture and holds the distinction of being the oldest brick church in Scandinavia. Originally part of a Benedictine monastery, the church was constructed in 1170 under King Valdemar the Great, replacing an earlier travertine stone church from around 1080. It served as the first royal church in Denmark and became the burial site for numerous early Danish kings and nobles, including Valdemar the Great, Knud VI, Valdemar Sejr, and Erik Menved. The church has endured several fires over the centuries, notably in 1241, 1300, and 1806, and underwent major restoration between 1899 and 1909. Architecturally, it is considered one of Denmark's most distinguished churches, featuring significant frescoes and a unique royal frieze dating from around 1325. Historically, it also hosted the Zealand Landsting court from 1584 to 1805. Today, Sankt Bendts Church stands as a testament to Denmark's medieval ecclesiastical and royal heritage, attracting visitors interested in history, architecture, and royal tombs.
