Biggesee
Nordrhein-Westfalen
Biggesee, also known as Bigge Reservoir, is a large artificial lake located in the southern Sauerland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was constructed between 1956 and 1965 to regulate water levels in the Ruhr and Lenne rivers and to supply water to the Ruhrgebiet metropolitan area. The reservoir has a capacity of 150 million cubic meters, making it the fifth largest in Germany by volume, and features a maximum depth of about 52 meters. The lake is fed by the Bigge River and is part of a larger reservoir system including the Listertalsperre. Biggesee supports hydroelectric power generation with a capacity of 17.52 MW, producing approximately 24 million kWh annually. The reservoir and its surroundings have become a popular destination for water sports such as sailing, surfing, rowing, canoeing, fishing, and diving, with two official diving areas and a diving school. Two passenger ships operate on the lake, providing scenic tours. The Gilberginsel island within the lake and adjacent lakeshore areas form a nature reserve, enhancing the ecological value of the site. Extensive cycling and hiking paths surround the lake, attracting visitors especially in summer. The Bigge Dam is part of the Industrial Heritage Trail and the Ruhr - Past and Present theme route, highlighting its cultural and industrial significance. Accessibility is supported by the Bigge Valley Railway with a unique lakeside station for direct transfer to passenger ships, as well as road and bus connections.

History
Planning for the Bigge Dam began as early as 1938, but construction officially started in 1956 after a financing law was passed by the North Rhine-Westphalia parliament.
The dam was completed in 1965, creating the Biggesee reservoir by combining with the pre-existing Listertalsperre from 1912.
The reservoir system has a total volume of 172 million cubic meters, with Biggesee holding 150 million.
The construction led to the resettlement of approximately 2,550 people in newly developed districts.
Infrastructure improvements included extensive new roads, cycle paths, and the realignment of the Bigge Valley Railway, featuring eight large and 24 smaller bridges.
Over time, the reservoir evolved from a functional water management project into a key recreational and cultural landmark, now integrated into regional heritage routes.
