Storia
The East Side Gallery was established in 1990 shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, when 118 artists from 21 countries painted murals on a 1,316-meter section of the Wall facing East Berlin.
It was officially founded following collaboration between East and West German artists' associations, with support from various sponsors who were ultimately declined to preserve artistic independence.
The gallery was inaugurated on 28 September 1990 on a ship on the Spree River.
Over the years, urban development and decay led to restoration efforts beginning in 2000, including a major renovation in 2009 that replaced many original paintings with replicas.
The site remains a protected cultural monument and a symbol of reunification and peace.
