The Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape is a magnificent 283-square-kilometer complex located in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. At its heart lies the Lednice Chateau, a former spectacular summer residence of the House of Liechtenstein. The estate is renowned for its unique architectural blend, culminating in a striking Tudor Gothic Revival redesign completed in the mid-19th century. The chateau is seamlessly integrated into a vast English-style landscape park, meticulously designed over several centuries. This harmonious environment features a network of picturesque ponds, riparian forests along the Thaya River, and extensive pine woods. Visitors can discover numerous romantic pavilions, follies, and hunting lodges scattered throughout the grounds. In 1996, the entire area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognized for its exceptional marriage of nature and architecture crafted by a single noble family.

Storia

1249

The history of the estate is deeply intertwined with the House of Liechtenstein, who acquired the nearby Valtice Castle in 1249 and maintained their principal residence in the area for 700 years.

Lednice originally served as a fortified manor from the 14th century before being expanded into a Baroque palace in the late 17th century.

1846

Between 1846 and 1858, Prince Aloys II commissioned a grand reconstruction, transforming Lednice into its current Tudor Gothic Revival style.

1939

The family continuously shaped the surrounding landscape until 1939, when they relocated to Vaduz due to World War II.

Following the war, the property was confiscated by the Czechoslovak state under the Beneš decrees, and it remains state-owned today despite ongoing restitution efforts by the Liechtenstein descendants.
