History
Originally designated as a wildlife refuge in the 1970s to protect migratory bird species using its wetlands, Palo Verde National Park evolved into a national park managed by Costa Rica's Ministry of Environment, Energy and Telecommunications (MINAE).
The area once hosted tens of thousands of migratory ducks and other waterfowl during dry seasons.
In the 1990s, the park was recognized internationally by being listed on the Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance and included in the Montreux Record, highlighting its critical ecological value and need for ongoing protection.
