History
The name Cumbuco originates from the Tupi language, meaning "long and low wave." The village was first mentioned in 1872 as a fishing village situated on an old farm divided into two parts: Parnamirim and Jabaquara.
By 1976, it was a small, isolated community with around 79 fishing families living in simple palm-thatch huts without basic infrastructure like roads, electricity, or healthcare.
In the mid-1970s, engineer João Bosco Aguiar Dias initiated a development project based on his urbanization thesis, leading to the construction of houses, schools, medical facilities, and roads.
The official inauguration of the Cumbuco Fishing Colony occurred in 1978, marking the foundation of the modern village.
Notably, no fishermen were displaced during this process; all received dignified housing with public deeds, preserving the community's heritage.
