Asen's Monument is a monumental sculpture complex located in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, dedicated to the four medieval Bulgarian tsars of the Asen dynasty: Asen, Peter, Kaloyan, and Ivan Asen II. Positioned on the rocky promontory of the Yantra River bend, the monument creates a natural amphitheater atmosphere. It was inaugurated in 1985 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the uprising led by the Asen brothers that liberated Bulgaria from Byzantine rule, marking the foundation of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The monument features four bronze equestrian statues, each reflecting the individual character and contributions of the rulers. The figures are mounted on granite pedestals seven meters high, with the total height of the sculptures reaching fifteen meters. A striking feature is the central giant sword, 33 meters tall, symbolizing the power and rise of medieval Bulgaria. The monument's artistic and technical design is unique, with two of the horsemen balanced only on their rear legs and tails, supported internally by Japanese steel springs and underground counterweights. The monument stands as a powerful symbol of Bulgaria's historical vitality and cultural heritage during the Asen dynasty's rule, when Veliko Tarnovo was a major political and cultural center in Europe.
