Storia
The hill of Tsarevets has been inhabited since at least the 2nd millennium BC, with a Byzantine city established in the 5th century.
Construction of the Bulgarian fortress began in the 12th century after the establishment of the Second Bulgarian Empire, which made Veliko Tarnovo its capital.
Tsarevets became the empire's strongest fortress and a symbol of Bulgarian power and culture.
It was besieged for three months and fell to the Ottomans in 1393, leading to the empire's collapse.
The fortress remained in ruins until restoration efforts began in 1930 and culminated in 1981 to commemorate Bulgaria's 1300th anniversary.
Since then, it has been preserved as a national historic site and tourist destination.
