Regional Historical Museum Pleven
Pleven
The Pleven Regional Historical Museum, established officially in 1953, is a major cultural institution in Bulgaria housed in a two-story building originally constructed between 1884 and 1888 as military barracks. The museum covers an area of 7,000 square meters and contains over 180,000 artifacts, including one of Bulgaria's richest numismatic collections with approximately 25,000 coins. Its permanent exhibition spans 24 halls divided into departments of archaeology, ethnography, Bulgarian National Revival, Ottoman rule, modern history, and natural history. The museum also features a specialized library with over 10,000 volumes of scientific literature. Notably, the museum preserves and presents significant archaeological sites from the Pleven and Lovech regions, including the Roman city Ulpia Escus and the late antique fortress Storgosia. In 2025, the museum opened a new exhibition dedicated to the 9th Infantry Pleven Division, highlighting Pleven's military heritage during the Wars of National Unification (1912–1918). The building itself is a monument of national cultural importance, reflecting Central European military architecture of the late 19th century. The museum plays an active role in research, conservation, and public education, making it a vital center for cultural preservation in northern Bulgaria.
