Berat Castle, also known as Kalaja e Beratit, is a historic fortress perched on a rocky hill overlooking the town of Berat, Albania. Primarily dating from the 13th century, the castle is notable for its extensive Byzantine-era Albanian Orthodox churches and remnants of Ottoman architecture, including a mosque used by the Turkish garrison. The fortress sits at an elevation of 214 meters on the right bank of the Osum River and is accessible mainly from the south. Its walls were fortified multiple times throughout history, including under Roman Emperor Theodosius II and Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, with significant reconstruction by Michael I Komnenos Doukas in the 13th century. Inside the castle, about 20 churches were built, many adorned with frescoes by renowned Albanian icon painters such as Onufri and the Zografi Brothers. Although some churches have been damaged over time, the remaining structures and frescoes are valuable cultural monuments reflecting the castle's predominantly Christian population during the Middle Ages. Today, Berat Castle remains a magnificent sight, symbolizing centuries of Albanian history and religious art.

Storia

Berat Castle's origins trace back to ancient times, with its walls strengthened in the 5th century under Roman Emperor Theodosius II to defend against barbarian invasions.

The fortress was rebuilt in the 6th century by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I and later extensively reconstructed in the 13th century by Michael I Komnenos Doukas, Despot of Epirus.

In the mid-14th century, it was under the rule of John Komnenos Asen.

Over the centuries, the castle housed a significant portion of Berat's population, primarily Christian, who built numerous churches within its walls.

Ottoman influence introduced a mosque for the Turkish garrison, though only ruins remain today.

Despite damage over time, the castle's architecture and religious monuments have been preserved as cultural heritage.
