The Hardegg Viewpoint is one of the most iconic and photographed spots in the Podyjí National Park. Situated on a steep rocky promontory on the Czech side of the border, it provides visitors with a spectacular vantage point over the deep, forested valley of the Dyje (Thaya) river. The main highlight of the panorama is the picturesque Austrian town of Hardegg, nestled in the valley below, dominated by its impressive 12th-century castle. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense, untouched forests and dramatic river meanders, preserved largely due to the area's history as a restricted border zone. Today, the viewpoint serves as a symbol of cross-border connection and natural beauty, attracting hikers and nature lovers from both countries. The wooden pavilion itself provides a perfect resting spot to admire the harmonious blend of medieval architecture and pristine nature.

Astuce: The viewpoint is best reached by walking or cycling from the nearby Czech village of Čížov, where you can also see a preserved section of the Iron Curtain. Autumn is a particularly stunning time to visit, as the mixed forests of the river valley burst into vibrant colors. Don't forget to bring binoculars for a closer look at Hardegg Castle.

Faits intéressants

  • The viewpoint sits at an elevation of approximately 410 meters above sea level, towering nearly 100 meters directly above the Dyje river.
  • Because the area was part of the Iron Curtain's 'no-go zone' for 40 years, the surrounding nature remained largely untouched, which eventually led to the creation of Podyjí National Park.
  • While the viewpoint is located in the Czech Republic, the town and castle it overlooks are situated in neighboring Austria.

Histoire

1885

The original viewing pavilion was constructed in 1885 by the Austrian Tourist Club to promote tourism in the picturesque Thaya valley.

Following World War II and the establishment of the Iron Curtain, the viewpoint found itself in the strictly guarded border zone and became completely inaccessible to the public for over four decades.

During this time, the original structure fell into disrepair and was eventually destroyed.

1989

After the fall of the communist regime in 1989, the area was opened up, and a faithful replica of the historic wooden pavilion was built in 1990, restoring this beloved tourist destination to its former glory.
