Pulkkilanharju Ridge is a remarkable natural feature located in Asikkala municipality, Päijät-Häme, Finland. Stretching approximately eight kilometers, it forms part of a longer ridge system extending from Vääksy through Pulkkilanharju to Nikkaroinen. The ridge is characterized by a series of connected peninsulas and islands that appear above the water surface of Lake Päijänne, while the ridge itself continues underwater as a continuous formation. The ridge's highest points rise sharply from the lake, creating striking landscapes and natural viewpoints. A regional road (314) runs along the ridge, crossing narrow straits via bridges and causeways, providing access and scenic views. Pulkkilanharju is renowned as one of Southern Finland's famous cultural landscapes, attracting visitors for its natural beauty and birdwatching opportunities, especially during spring and autumn migrations when many birds use the ridge as a safe crossing over the lake. Part of the ridge's islands belong to Päijänne National Park, enhancing its conservation and recreational value. The climate around Pulkkilanharju is milder than the surrounding region, influenced by Lake Päijänne's moderating effect. The ridge also features a resting area with a café and nature trails, offering visitors a chance to experience the distinctive glacial landform up close.

Historie

250

Pulkkilanharju Ridge was formed approximately 11,250 to 11,790 years ago during the last Ice Age, simultaneously with the creation of the second Salpausselkä ridge near Vääksy.

It originated from a subglacial meltwater tunnel beneath the continental ice sheet, where fast-flowing water deposited sand and gravel against a hard bedrock surface.

As the ice margin retreated during summer seasons, the ridge's sandy layers were deposited under a glacial lake, creating a layered structure.

Subsequent land uplift and changes in water levels caused the ridge to alternately emerge above and submerge below water.

Human influence has also modified the ridge's waterways, especially in the 19th century when water levels in Lake Päijänne were lowered and natural channels were altered.

The ridge has three natural straits formed by water erosion, which have been affected by both natural processes and human activity over time.
