Historie
Petäjävesi Old Church was constructed between 1763 and 1764 as a chapel church for the Petäjävesi prayer community under the Jämsä parish, following a royal permission granted in 1728.
Its location on a small peninsula between lakes allowed parishioners to reach it easily by boat or over frozen water in winter.
The church was designed and built by Jaakko Klemetinpoika Leppänen, a local farmer and builder.
In 1821, the bell tower was added by his grandson, Erkki Leppänen, and some structural modifications were made to the windows and sacristy.
The church was used actively until 1879 when a new church was completed.
After decades of neglect, interest in its architectural and historical value was revived in the 1920s by art historian Josef Strzygowski.
Restoration efforts began in 1929, culminating in its 1994 designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
