現在のラオスの地域には少なくとも紀元前2000年から人類が居住しており、初期の人間の定住地や農業共同体の証拠が存在する。
ファ・ングムによってランサーン王国が建国され、統一されたラオス国家の始まりとなった。ランサーンは「百万の象」を意味し、東南アジアで強力な王国となった。
ランサーン王国は内部の対立と継承争いにより、ルアンパバーン、ヴィエンチャン、チャンパサックの三つの王国に分裂した。
ラオスは仏印の一部としてフランスの保護領となり、仏暹戦争の後、地域におけるフランス植民地支配の始まりを示した。
第二次世界大戦中、日本軍がラオスを占領した。日本の敗北後、ラオスは一時独立を宣言したが、フランス軍が再び支配権を確立した。
ラオス人民民主共和国は、北ベトナムの支援を受けた共産主義パテト・ラオ運動が国を掌握し、君主制を終わらせて設立された。
