The Supraśl Orthodox Monastery, also known as the Supraśl Lavra, is a historic Eastern Orthodox men's monastery located in Supraśl, Podlaskie Voivodeship, Poland. Founded in 1498 by Aleksander Chodkiewicz and Archbishop Joseph Soltan, it became a vital center of Orthodox culture, housing a large library and maintaining connections with major Orthodox sites like Kiev Lavra and Mount Athos. The monastery complex features Baroque buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries, including the Archimandrites' Palace which hosts the Supraśl Icon Museum. The Church of the Annunciation, originally built between 1503 and 1511, was destroyed in 1944 and has been under reconstruction since 1985, with surviving fresco fragments displayed in the palace. Over centuries, the monastery underwent changes in administration, including periods under the Basilian Order and the Russian Orthodox Church. It was a significant publishing center, producing hundreds of titles in Ruthenian, Polish, and Latin. Despite damages during World War II and use as an agricultural academy under communist rule, the monastery was restored to the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church post-communism, which continues conservation efforts. The monastery is also known for the Codex of Supraśl, one of the oldest Slavic literary works. Today, it remains an active religious site and cultural monument, designated a Polish Historic Monument in 2023.
