Markiezenhof
Noord-Brabant
Markiezenhof is a magnificent late Gothic city palace located in Bergen op Zoom, in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant. Built in 1485 under the direction of the Mechelen architects Antoon I Keldermans and Rombout II Keldermans, it served as the residence of the Lords and later the Margraves of Bergen op Zoom. The palace was designed to reflect the city's growing importance as a trade hub, featuring an impressive red window bay façade. Completed in 1511, it became one of the most beautiful late-Gothic city palaces in Western Europe. Over the centuries, the palace underwent several modifications, including 17th-century modernizations by François Egon de la Tour d'Auvergne, who altered the arcade and the tower. After the abolition of the margraviate in 1795, the building was repurposed as a military hospital and later a barracks, falling into disrepair. Restoration efforts began in the 1960s, reviving the original architectural features such as the arcades and the palace tower. Today, Markiezenhof operates as a museum showcasing the lifestyle of the margraves through its four style rooms furnished with 16th to 18th-century artifacts. Notable highlights include the monumental 15,000 kg Christoffel fireplace from 1521, a detailed 1747 model of Bergen op Zoom, and exhibitions on historical fairs and markets. The palace also houses the symbolic Zeeridder wind vane, a half-human, half-fish figure representing the city's heritage and artistry. Together with the Onze Lieve Vrouwekapel, Markiezenhof is a national monument and featured in the Top 100 of the Dutch Monument Care Service.
