The Christ at El Picacho is an imposing monument located on the hill of El Picacho in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, standing at 4,353 feet above sea level. Created in 1997 to commemorate the approaching Jubilee Year 2000, it was designed by Honduran sculptor Mario Zamora Alcantara. The sculpture weighs 2,500 tons and reaches a total height of 98 feet, with the figure of Christ measuring 65 feet atop a 33-foot pedestal. Positioned on the west side of the hill, it is visible to over sixty percent of the Central District's population, especially illuminated at night. The monument was constructed with reinforced concrete and fiberglass molds, involving a dedicated team and extensive engineering expertise. Surrounding the statue is the Parque El Picacho, a public park offering terraces, gardens, and various amenities developed in multiple phases from 1997 through 2010. The park itself is a popular tourist attraction open daily, providing visitors with panoramic views of Tegucigalpa and a cultural experience blending nature and spirituality.

History

1997

The idea for the Christ at El Picacho monument was initiated in 1997 by Archbishop Oscar Andres Rodriguez as part of preparations for the Jubilee Year 2000.

After evaluating several locations, a site 30 meters below the highest peak of El Picacho hill was selected due to space constraints at the summit.

Funding was raised through contributions from the Honduran people and various organizations.

1997

The monument, designed by Mario Zamora Alcantara, was constructed over seven months and officially opened on January 16, 1997.

2010

Subsequent phases of development expanded the surrounding park with terraces, gardens, walls, towers, and facilities through 2010.
