Poda Protected Area, established in 1989 near Burgas on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, is a significant nature conservation site managed by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB). It is part of the Burgas Lakes wetland complex and serves as a critical stopover and breeding site for many migratory bird species along the Via Pontica migration route. The area hosts a unique mixed heron colony including spoonbills, glossy ibises, and various herons, alongside other breeding birds such as marsh harriers and terns. Its diverse habitats include brackish, fresh, and hypersaline waters, supporting a rich biodiversity of over 265 bird species, some globally endangered like the pygmy cormorant and Dalmatian pelican. The Poda Nature Conservation Center, open year-round, offers educational activities, birdwatching facilities, and guided tours by ornithologists, attracting thousands of visitors annually. The site exemplifies sustainable conservation managed by an NGO, combining environmental education, eco-tourism, and habitat protection within an urban-adjacent landscape.
