St. Stephen's Cathedral, also known locally as Katedralja e Shkodrës or Kisha e Madhe, is a major Roman Catholic cathedral located in Shkodër, northwestern Albania. Dedicated to Saint Stephen, the city's first patron saint, the cathedral stands as one of the largest Catholic churches in the Balkans, reflecting a fusion of religious devotion and cultural identity. Construction began in 1858 on land donated by Palok Krandja, with funding support from Sultan Abdülmecid I, Pope Pius IX, and Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph. The cathedral measures approximately 74 meters in length, 50 meters in width, and 23.5 meters in height, originally accommodating up to 6,000 standing worshippers. Its wooden dome was replaced with more durable materials in 1897, and the vault was decorated in 1909 by the Albanian painter Kolë Idromeno, whose frescoes include the "Lady of Shkodër" flanked by angels in traditional folk costumes, with the city and Rozafa Castle depicted in the background. The cathedral suffered damage during the Siege of Scutari (1912–1913), including fire in the bell tower caused by Montenegrin bombardments. Closed in 1967 during Albania's Cultural Revolution and repurposed as a Palace of Sports, the cathedral's towers were destroyed and its portal sealed. It was reopened in 1990, hosting the first Mass in Albania since the communist era, and was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1993. Today, the cathedral remains a symbol of religious resilience and architectural grandeur in Albania.
