The Book Café
Harare
The Book Café in Harare, Zimbabwe, is a renowned community arts centre established in 1993 that serves as a vital platform for free cultural expression and artistic development, especially for younger artists. Founded by Paul Brickhill to provide a venue for his band Luck Street Blues, it has hosted nearly 7,500 concerts and events, including jazz fusion and African jazz performances that helped revive traditional music forms like the mbira. The café has been instrumental in nurturing Zimbabwe's cultural scene by offering a space where artists and audiences meet to share ideas and inspiration. Despite facing eviction in 2011 and a temporary closure, The Book Café reopened in 2012 at a larger venue on Samora Machel Avenue, resuming its role as a leading cultural institution. It also reopened its bookshop later that year, further enriching the cultural life of Harare. The Book Café was the first African theatre to receive the prestigious Prince Claus Award, recognizing its significant contribution to arts and culture.
