Grandfather Mountain
North Carolina
Grandfather Mountain, located near Linville, North Carolina, is the highest peak on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains, rising to 5,964 feet (1,818 meters). Renowned for its rugged landscape, it hosts 16 distinct ecological communities, including a rare Southern Appalachian spruce-fir forest at its summit. The mountain features four named peaks: Calloway Peak, Attic Window Peak, MacRae Peak, and Linville Peak, with MacRae being notably challenging to access due to exposed approaches. It is famous for the mile-high swinging bridge built in 1952, which connects two rocky peaks and sways in the wind, offering thrilling views. Grandfather Mountain is also the source of two rivers, the Linville and Watauga, and numerous streams. The mountain experienced private ownership until 2008 when it was partially incorporated into the North Carolina State Park system, while the tourist attraction side remains managed by a stewardship foundation. Its high winds, caves, and cliffs contribute to its wild character, making it a unique natural and cultural landmark in the Appalachian region.

Histoire
Grandfather Mountain was privately owned and operated as a nature preserve and tourist attraction until 2008.
The iconic mile-high swinging bridge was constructed in 1952 by Hugh Morton, who inherited the mountain from his grandfather and developed its attractions.
After Morton's death in 2006, the state of North Carolina purchased 2,600 acres of undeveloped land on the mountain in 2008, creating Grandfather Mountain State Park in 2009.
The Morton family established the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation to continue managing the tourist areas as an educational nature park, maintaining a balance between conservation and public access.
