Established in 2005, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a private wildlife ranch in northern Uganda dedicated to reintroducing and conserving the Southern White Rhino, a species once extinct in the country. The sanctuary spans approximately 70 square kilometers and is secured by a two-meter electric fence, ensuring the safety of its rhino population and other wildlife. It operates through a partnership between a private land management company and the Uganda Wildlife Authority, blending conservation with tourism. Visitors can witness rhinos in their natural habitat, alongside diverse mammals, reptiles, and over 300 bird species. The ranch offers various activities including rhino trekking, birding tours, nature walks, and canoe rides. Modern tourist facilities such as luxury chalets, campsites, a restaurant, bar, and swimming pool enhance the visitor experience. The sanctuary plays a crucial role in breeding rhinos for eventual reintroduction into Uganda’s national parks, contributing significantly to wildlife restoration efforts in the region.
