Originally known as the "Saa Nane Island Game Sanctuary," the park was named after Mzee Saanane Chavandi, a local farmer and fisherman.
During the Uganda–Tanzania War in 1979, the island was accidentally bombed by a Libyan Tupolev Tu-22 bomber targeting Mwanza city, which missed and instead hit the sanctuary.
This attack caused injuries to one worker and killed several animals, including multiple antelopes and birds.
Since then, the area has been preserved as a national park, focusing on protecting its unique wildlife and natural environment.
