Ruaha National Park
Central Tanzania Region
Ruaha National Park, located in central Tanzania, is one of the country's largest national parks, encompassing over 20,000 square kilometers after expansion in 2008. It forms a critical part of the Rungwa-Kizigo-Muhesi ecosystem, which includes several game reserves and wildlife management areas. The park is named after the Great Ruaha River, a vital water source that supports abundant wildlife and is a prime game-viewing spot. Visitors can access the park via a dirt road from Iringa or by small aircraft landing on one of its two airstrips. The park's landscape varies seasonally, with hot and dry conditions from May to October, leading to diminished water sources and dry vegetation. Ruaha is notable for its rich biodiversity, hosting a wide range of mammals such as lions, East African cheetahs, African leopards, wild dogs, and various antelope species. It also supports over 570 bird species, including resident hornbills and many migratory birds. Despite its ecological importance, the park faces challenges such as a significant decline in its elephant population and incidents of wildlife poisoning.

Astuce: The best time to visit Ruaha National Park is during the dry season from May to October when wildlife congregates near water sources, improving game-viewing opportunities. Visitors should consider booking accommodations and flights to the park's airstrips in advance due to limited access. While purchasing tickets, inquire about any available conservation or multi-park discounts. Bringing binoculars and a camera with a good zoom is recommended to fully appreciate the diverse wildlife. Prepare for hot daytime temperatures and cooler nights by dressing in layers and carrying sufficient water.

The park expanded significantly in 2008 with the addition of the Usangu Game Reserve and surrounding wetlands, increasing its area to over 20,000 square kilometers.
