Cristo Rei of Dili
DĂli
Cristo Rei of Dili is a colossal 27-meter-high statue of Jesus Christ standing atop a globe on Cape Fatucama, a prominent peninsula in Dili, Timor-Leste. Designed and constructed under the supervision of Indonesian artist Mochamad Syailillah, known as "Bolil", it was unveiled in 1996 as a gift from the Indonesian government during East Timor's integration into Indonesia. The statue portrays Christ wrapped in a robe, with facial features inspired by Greek and Roman simplicity. Visitors reach the statue via a shaded 570-step concrete staircase starting from Cristo Rei Beach, rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views over the Bay of Dili, Atauro Island, and surrounding straits. The statue rests on a globe and is accompanied by a 10-meter-high cross, both installed with careful engineering to withstand strong local winds. Despite its religious symbolism, the statue was politically controversial during its unveiling, reflecting complex historical tensions in the region. Today, it remains one of Timor-Leste's main tourist attractions, blending spiritual significance with stunning natural vistas.
