The Cathedral Basilica of Queen of Peace, also known as San Miguel Cathedral, is a prominent Catholic church located in San Miguel, El Salvador. Originally, the site hosted a parish church dedicated to St Michael Archangel, which was demolished in 1862 to make way for a larger temple that would also honor the Virgin Our Lady of Peace. Construction began under the supervision of English engineer William Kirk, with the first stone reportedly laid by President Gerardo Barrios in November 1862. Although unfinished, the church was elevated to cathedral status by Pope Pius X in 1913. The patronage of Our Lady of Peace was proclaimed in 1921, coinciding with a papal coronation of the image by Monsignor Juan Antonio Dueñas y Argumedo on behalf of Pope Benedict XV. The cathedral's construction was completed in 1962, a century after it began, largely thanks to the efforts of then-pastor Oscar Romero. This cathedral stands as a significant religious and cultural landmark in San Miguel, reflecting its deep historical roots and devotion.
